This video features an in-depth comparison of a 9-wood vs 5-hybrid vs 4-iron. For 2nd Swing master club fitters, this dilemma is a common one for many golfers at the top of the iron set. High-lofted fairway woods and hybrids, like a 9-wood or a 5-hybrid, continue to gain popularity because of the higher launch and spin rates they generate. But what are the exact differences between them?

In this video, 2nd Swing's Drew Mahowald is joined by Emma Carpenter for a head-to-head comparison featuring a 9-wood, 5-hybrid, and 4-iron. How does the performance of a 9-wood differ from a 5-hybrid and 4-iron? Should you consider playing a 9-wood?

I’m thinking about taking my 3–4-5 irons out of my bag, along with the 4 hybrid, and replacing them with a 7 and 11 wood. That would leave me with a driver, 3-7-11 woods, 5 hybrid, 6-9 irons, PW, GW, SW, LW, and putter.
I’m just starting my second year golfing, and I’m really starting to learn the technical side of the game, and beginning to tailor my clubs to my game…my handicap dropped from 36 to 24 during my last month or so of playing last year. Not impressive by any stretch, but I’m making big strides, and I’m starting to really “feel” what good shots are, and I’m starting to be more able to replicate them fairly regular… and I’m having a BLAST! Love golf…
I’m going with a G440 Max, 4, 7 and 9 wood combo
You can drop your 4 iron because now you 6 or even maybe your 6 iron is the same loft as your old 4 iron😂
This is a great comparison… Many years ago (early 1980s) I picked up a used MacGregor Hi/Loft wood… it had a persimmon head (black paint) with an aluminum insert, about a 7.5 degree loft… I fell in love that club… it was like hitting a 200 yd wedge… I even backed the ball up 5-10 feet on a few greens… After using it for about 5 year the persimmon cracked and I had to replace the club… I never found another one and have been missing it ever since. Emma… put the 9W in your bag and enjoy the advantages… I might be doing some shopping myself 😉
I play 3, 5, and 7 Woods, and Hybrids 4 &5 delete 4 & 5 irons. If i will add 9 wood, it looks like im gonna multiple woods may eliminate all irons 😅 but honestly i can play without irons and I control the distance of all my clubs to be in the green.
Take this for what it’s worth … I hate her and I hate her swing. That 💩 looks flawless. 😊
Great video
a gazzilion words and 15 shots. Can you consider to do the opposite? The comparison is interesting, but you killing me with the talk….it become soooo boring. Apologies in advance
I have used 9,7,5 woods instead of hybrids for several years . Being in my eighty’s I found those fareway clubs more consistent and longer than Irons or hybrids.
So 9 wood is what we are all starting the think should go in the bag…goes against the old longer club harder to hit theory…its actually the most forgiving and best shot arc and distance…would be curious to have a mid handicapped hit it for dispersion
Way too much gibber gabber in this video.
This is exciting! This is a great first episode of the new season of Fargo!
Here for EC!!!
I used to go down to a 4 Iron but for the past two years my lowest iron is a 6, playing a Ping 440/430, Driver, 3W, 5W, 7W and 9W, my gapping is bang on about 10-15 yards between every club, the 7 and 9 woods are also great for playing out of thicker rough but more importantly I’ve seen my H.I. come down from 12 to 6.8 in that same time. I’m 58 and I hit my 9W 196 yds, I use it on two of my clubs Par3s. The 9W alone is such a versatile club.
Really great discussion on these clubs
I just purchased a new set of clubs, PXG. Love them and I now play with a 4w, 7w and a 9 wood. My 9 wood is my favorite club. I hit a lot of greens and they stick! Love the woods and gave up my hybrids
Drew is so good interacting with and fitting golfers! Emma is a delight!!! Great Vid!!!
I would have like to the 23° Callaway UW tested along side of these
Love all your videos. I do wonder if you can bend the lie angle in 9 wood? 5 hybrid?
My 7 wood has been amazing for me and I've been thinking to add a 9…thanks!
Nothing unexpected from a fitter perspective… Drew knew. Matching lofts was key… names are meaningless. I have two "4h's"… 24* and 20*… about 20 years apart.
A buddy has 7w & 9w and loves them. I opted for 20*h over 7w for more penetrating flight in wind. I am not realistically hitting that many greens from 230 requiring a soft landing shot… I do play in wind and also need to hit lower punch shots from trees which is what the 3&4i were mostly used for. 😅
