The @lagshotgolf3730 Driver Training Aid is an excellent tool for teaching you to feel how the shaft loads by the pressure in your hands. It also helps you get a sense of how the club lags behind you.

Mike demonstrates how to magnify what the Lag Shot Driver does. Mike’s teaching has always been about exaggerating drills. By being able to feel and exaggerate the opposite feeling, you can then find the middle. You want to maximize what this training aid can do.

When you swing the Lag Shot driver, the weight of the clubhead will put pressure on the shaft, bending it and creating lag. You will also feel the pressure in the hands and wrists. How do you magnify this feeling? Turn the club around and hold it at the bottom of the clubhead, and practice swinging the handle. The handle will still bend and flex as you swing and feel the same pressure. Flip the club back around and make a practice swing with the club. Just doing this drill will magnify the pressure in the shaft, hands, and wrists even more.

Mike can time the swing so that he hits the ball as far if not farther than his regular driver. There is so much pressure in the swing, and it kicks at the right time. Feeling this relative to the rotation of your body is another reason why turning the driver around will make you aware of the clubhead and how the body is moving. This will also make you feel the timing of getting the clubface to run into the ball.

  1. Interesting concept Mike, thanks! I use the thought of relaxed hands and wrists, and let the left knee lead the transition. PS: The perimeter of that driving range looks like serious rattlesnake habitat.

  2. I elusively feel this feeling of "kick" with my driver. When I do it bombs. I just can't isolate why and how to recreate. It's magic when it does. So frustrating. But you put my feeling into words.
