Coming over the top is the one swing error many golfers wish they could stop. This simple drill will help you.

Coming over the top is when the club, and hands, work above the plane of the club that was established at set up. There are numerous reasons this happens; the arms outrace the body in transition and the downswing, the trail shoulder joint looking to realign itself, the list has numerous reasons. But doing this simple exercise consistently will have you in the path to straighter, longer and higher shots in with some practice.

First, set up an alignment stick parallel to your target line. This will be used for your body lines.

Second, set your a second alignment stick directly on the target line. However, instead of leaving it flat on the ground you’re going to raise the tip side, that’s closest to the target approximately 12”-18”. The tip side away from the target will be pushed into the ground. This should have the alignment rod at an angle of approximately 20 degrees.

Third, place a golf ball directly under the tip side of the stick that’s raised.

Fourth, make practice swings and on both the backswing and downswings the goal is to hit the golf ball WITHOUT HITTING THE STICK! If you hit the stick rehearse it again until you can swing without hitting it. If you’re really struggling with this, move the golf ball slightly closer towards you (and no longer under the stick) with the goal of improving over time and moving the ball back under the stick.

Fifth, once you can make swings, in both directions without hitting the stick now you’re ready to move to hitting golf balls with the same instructions as above.

With some perseverance and practice you will be hitting the ball better and eliminate you’re over the top motion.

What is The Golf Paradigm (Pair-a-dime)?
The Golf Paradigm is a theory that encompasses a Whole-In-One approach to improvement. It begins with the overall paradigm; i.e. the game of golf. Followed by two parts that are always to remain in balance; i.e. the golf yin/yang – ‘improving’ and ‘enjoyment’. Helping to maintain that balance are the 5 elements of the game; the swing, club fitting, health/fitness, mental, and integration. Knowing which area to focus on and how the other areas supplement that helps to form the golfers ‘recipe’ for improvement. As the golfer improves their recipe, or what is focused on, changes and this is what allows them to reach levels of play they never thought possible. It’s not magical, but it’s close.
