Our latest Story of a Golf Club episode is from West Lancs GC, the second oldest course in these parts, originally founded by a number of Hoylake members, seeking to grow the popular Scottish game in 1873. It sits on a stretch of coastline with some of England’s best golf courses, and rightly deserves its place among the greats of the region. Its a tough test of golf, with land that mother nature can only have left us with for the purpose of golf, which has enjoyed the involvement of architects throughout its history.

Moderate in length, the challenge at West Lancs is around the greens and with your approach play. The surrounding areas are exquisite and this has some of the most incredible runoffs you will see anywhere in the game. An errant approach shot is almost certainly going to be met with a difficult up and down for par, and whilst the views of the Mersey estuary are spectacular, you’ll need your full concentration around here as you navigate your way through the dunes if you are to score well!

The club enjoys a rich history, with Harold Hilton as its first paid secretary who enjoyed perhaps the greatest Amateur career with the exception of Bobby Jones, from Atlanta, and today the course still attracts some of the best talent in the game to its prestigious events, notably the Women’s Amateur in 2020

The reason for founding West Lancs was simple, Hoylake was becoming over crowded

Superbly presented, the 21:9 cinema ratio really adds to it.

I think this place is a hidden Gem and not the respect it deserves, I've played many years ago and it was so tough, I enquired about a membership only last week to be told the membership was full 😪⛳️👍 maybe one day 👌 I do think this is up there with the clubs up the road Birkdale, hillside🏌️⛳️

David Richardson says:

Another first class work of art 👏🏻 a beautiful subject. The remote feel of this place belies how close it is to Liverpool.

Florian Pichler says:

Good stuff as always guys!

Great drone shots and history of the club/ players and events was superb. Subscribed for life

Ste Howlett says:

First of all I’d just like to say that this is a fantastic video once again! 👏🏻👏🏻

However, I played West Lancs last May, £110 I paid I think and I was extremely disappointed. Although the welcome at the club was great the course really didn’t live up to my expectations. I’d recommend Formby over this all day, it might be a bit more expensive but it is in a different league. Even further north I played St Anne’s old links for £35 a couple of weeks a go and that was far better. All about opinions I suppose.

Sam Williams says:
