Great lesson tip and advice from the Maestro himself, Ben Hogan.
The greatest swing and ball striker ever.
No gibberish, no method, just solid advice and fundamentals.
He had it figured out, long before video lessons. launch monitors, pressure mats and the such, amazing talent. He was a brilliant gifted man.

Before you can hit drivers and fairway woods and hybrids off of tees, your grip needs to be right. Golfers must stand with the correct posture, aim and ball position to encourage a high ball flight. Have a forward ball position about even or slightly ahead of the forward armpit crease, the pelvis and shoulders tilted upward somewhat and also tilted rearward a bit. All to further encourage a high ball flight. The shallow, roughly dollar bill-sized divot still needs to be ahead of the ball, like it is for every club except the driver. Ball position should be full forward for tee shots; half a ball to a ball farther back for long irons and hybrids; another ball back, about even with the lead ear for middle irons; nearer to the middle of the stance, about even with the left side of the nose, for normal short irons and wedge shots. Chips usually have the ball positioned at the back of a narrow stance. I think slightly ahead of center with the putter is ideal, to promote a slightly upward contact and top spin so your putts track their way to the target as accurately as possible.
The commentator is so correct: watch Hogan's physical sequence, beginning from the end of the backswing coil. The downswing is a sequence of motion begun by lead heel returning to the ground which moves the hips several inches forward then they rotate 90 degrees to fac the target. Once started, this movement must be continued in rhythm. The hips finish moving when they face target, followed by the hands dropping downward and the back elbow returns close to the lower right side of the rib cage. That is the so-called 'magic move'.
As 90-100 percent of the player's weight is returned to the lead leg, the hips ie the pelvis slide forward and upward then immediately rotate counterclockwise to the left for a right handed player. The movement of the lower body naturally pulls the torso, shoulders, arms, hands and clubhead through the hitting zone up to a full finish then the elbows drop and come to rest on the golfer's rib cage. That's your swing motion, folks. Learn that and you can start to learn to play scratch golf.
For shots off of uneven lies, hardpan, sand, in waste areas, tall grass, even very shallow water, the golfer has to assess the lie. You cannot hit a high shot that stops on a dime from six-inch rough. For those shots, golfers must play the ball farther back in the stance, then level out the hips and shoulders and make your swing more U-shaped rather tan V-shaped. Hit down onto the ball and keep the legs and the lead arm moving through to the finish and expect a low running hook. In bunkers remember to open the face of your sand wedge to allow it to bounce of the sand, rather than dig in steeply.
He only developed this swing because he was fighting a hook for his entire career. He's famous for the low-left exit which kept the face square & couldn't hit it left. It was almost a hold-off shot. In the most famous picture of him shown from behind, which I believe was at Merion, at the finish of his swing, you can actually see the palm of his right hand which couldn't have been physically possible with a standard release. Still a great swing no matter how it happened.
Incredible swing! I can't perform it! I have a much less complicated method, BUT NO ONE WOULD LISTEN, SO HAVE AT IT! 😂😂😂
Amazing to think Mr Hogan played and won the British open first time out….. and didn't miss a fairway……none of the modern pro's can do that…. the goat 💯💯
Great video! No arrogance, no ego; just simple, pure lesson.
Don’t go near this swing, it’s looks to simple and easy, it’s actually really hard for an amateur to do this, such a nice swing tho
Is this still how to do it properly?
Best video I watched on Ben Hogan. Bert Yancey taught me the secret of repeating my golf swing. I learn under Bert Yancey for 2 years on Hilton Head Island S.C. – I grew up playing golf at Hillwood Country Club in Nashville, TN. and I played golf with my dad and his good friends Chet Atkins. Archie Campbell and all the big music industry people. Bruce Crawford Golf Swing – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxdEcyDPlH0
He makes it sound simple. It might have been for him because he had the right genetics. Not so simple for less-blessed folk.
Thank you Ben ❤❤❤
You saved my life 3 weeks ago
you proved anyone can shot a 70s round no matter what age you are
and it’s simple to follow
greatest swing ever from the God of golf
It appears as if he keeps more weight on the left foot at the top of the backswing , similar to the modern stack and tilt swing ?
Took him a decade on the tour to come good from sheer hard work and practice.
