Driver shaft length – if it is too long, grip down…it is cheaper than buying a new shaft
Wedges: many people carry 3, a gap wedge (usually about 50 degrees), a sand wedge (usually around 54 degrees) and a lob wedge. In most cases the style of gap wedge should be similar to your PW. Do you really need a lob wedge, with decent technique you can get out of all bunkers with a 54 degree wedges. Better still get properly fit for wedges
Long irons: haven't carried a 4i never mind anything longer in irons for about 10 years – and my last 4i had a loft similar to my current 5i (which at 26 degrees would be considered weak now). In fact do you really need a 5i, especially if you are playing the modern stronger lofts (7i loft of 31 degrees or less). I suspect the average swing speed golfer would struggle to consistently launch any iron with a loft of less than 25 degrees. A 5h is an amazing high launching club (too high for me).
From extensive (!!) personal experience a 5w is a great club for a little bump and run type of shot, that can go a long way, that keeps under tree branches!
A 58 degree is my favorite wedge… absolutely not a waste of space.
Very good video. You covered the topics at hand quite well.
Started using a 60 wedge brilliant club out of bunkers and over bunkers ?
Got custom fitted in January this year by Titleist, my favourite driver, and shaft was cut down by o.75". I think the other issue with driver is loft. Too many people go for a lower loft when they really need to launch the ball higher for more carry.
Old club tech (build, repair, fitting), speaking here. On hybrids and fairway woods. It's not the extra bulk and mass that makes them easier to hit up to fly. The heads actually aren't any heavier. In fact, since most hybrids and high lofted woods are longer than their equivalent irons, noticeably so with the woods, the heads are lighter to keep the swingweight under control.
What is different is HOW they are weighted, and how people react to them. First of all, they are hollow bodied, and therefore perimeter weighted. They tend to have more head MOI (moment of inertia), and therefore more resistance to twisting on off centre hits. More so even than game improvement irons. So they don't lose as much distance. Secondly, they are more low and back weighted than irons. That lower and further back centre of gravity helps launch the ball higher, which helps out average golfers enormously. It also magnifies the head MOI, adding to the forgiveness. Finally, most people seem to feel more confidence with that more substantial clubhead sitting behind the ball. So they hit it better, and get it up in the air more.
Without a doubt they work better for most people than long irons. That's why.
Driver (44inch ) , 3 wood, 5 wood , 7 wood , 9 wood, 11 wood, 7-PW , 48,52,56 wedges and DF3 lab putter…3wood comes in when my driver is misbehaving
It’s true I use my gps watch middle to green. The range finder can be used to determine yardage to a bunker or tree. Watch GPS.
Binned the driver for a mini driver, use a heavenwood & 7 OR 9 wood instead of 4/5/6 irons and bought a mallet putter at the start of this season. Taken 2 off my handicap.
I just put in a new Ventus Red shaft that is a 3 wood length in my driver. It seemed to tighten up the dispersion for me. But, I need to do more testing.
I play my best with a limited bag. Try to keep it 7 occasionally add an 8 but it makes you more thoughtful on what you include and why ( also cuts down on cost some)
I think a rangefinder is best for your 100 yd. and in shot. The difference between a 60 and 70 yd. shot is significant if you really want to sharpen your short game.
Cut my shaft down to 44 about 2 months ago and playing with a nice fade instead of a quite bigger slice sweet
I couldn't play that course, beautiful as it is…the sheep would be in great danger
Superb video Andy thank you ????
???????? Great advice not only with this video , have been following you from day one and really appreciate all the work , it's absolutely amazing ????????????
I disagree about the long irons being tossed out. I hit my 3 & 4iron much, much better than any hybrid or FW wood. I am over 50 years old with average swing speed, but just have much more confidence with the long irons. The cookie-cutter narrative out there, tries to convince me that I’m not supposed to be able to hit long irons, but my experience has proven otherwise.
Isn’t the mini driver 43 3/4” long?
I’ve recently switched from the previous generation CBX wedges to the new SmartSole 4 range and seen a noticeable improvement in my short game. Sticking with Cleveland I’ve been able to pick up both a 21 degree 7 wood and 21 degree 4 hybrid for to a lot of money and currently working on which one I prefer to go in the bag.
I started playing 4 years ago now and I have a 6 hybride, 9 Wood, 4 hybride and love them, it’s really helped my game. Keep up the great videos ????
if you insist on using a 58 or 60, check out something similar to a "K" grind from Vokey
My friend has 17 clubs in his bag. Losing 5 should be easy for him..✌️⛳????️
