Today, Ian is in the bay to do a little test of the benefits of a shorter driver shaft vs. TaylorMade's BRNR Mini Driver.

Today drivers come in at around 45 to 45.5 inches in length. So, is cutting down a regular driver more beneficial than a Mini Driver? And which setup proves to be the ultimate fairway finder? 304CC Mini Driver vs 460CC Driver cut to a 44 Inch Mini Driver shaft length?

Just wanted to let you know how disappointed I am that Club Champion posted Bryson’s Trump video. You can say that you’re not political all that you want — but the indisputable facts are that Trump was found to be a sexual assaulted by a jury, is a convicted felon, and is still facing dozens of other charges because he sent a violent mob to attack then Capitol to overthrow the government and reviewed a free and fair election. He is disgusting, as is Club Champions use of that moronic video. I’m a big fan. But I won’t be watching your videos anymore, and I will never get fit or shop at Club Champion. I will not patronize a business to at is so utterly blind to serious issues that affect us all. Wishing you all the best — but if it’s possible — you should run from Club Champion as soon as possible.

On holes where I absolutely need to find the fairway, I will choke way down on my driver grip where my hands almost touch the shaft. Creates a situation where it’s about hybrid length but with the forgiveness of the driver head. It’s about 15-20 yards shorter than full driver distance but a reliable fairway finder.

I've personally gone with the short driver after watching a video from PINGs Marty Jertson a few months back. It's been amazing off the tee. So much forgiveness in the G430 Max and still carries around 255-260 for me. I'm a pretty confident driver of the golf ball but the short driver is great when holes tighten up, it allows you to stay aggressive. I've then got a 5 wood which can deal with second shots into par 5s etc, similar to what Ian was saying. Love this video guys, keep the content coming 🙂

I just put a 44.5 TSR3 into my bag and it got my driving FH up from 55% to over 70%. Does that make me play better? maybe, maybe not but hitting from a fairway is always better than rough. However, I lost 10-20 yards and so I am still switching between the 2 drivers to see whether it is worth the lost of distance.

@bboisblanc5084 says:

It goes without saying that Ian is a great golfer so no doubt he was able to adjust to get the cut down Driver to go straighter on the second round. But, the TM Mini is just point and shoot every time. That's a big reason for that club. If you need something that is nearly always dead straight for those tight tee shot occasions, hard to beat the TM Mini.

I’ve been using a 13.5 Cobra 3-wood for a couple years now and it has helped my game. On par 4’s and 5’s I noticed I would opt out of hitting driver and instead hit my 5-wood or hybrid for ball placement, so my driver would not get used a lot, if at all. With a driver, sure it’s fun hitting a 300+ swing to the middle of the fairway but if that approach shot is in between clubs that could mean a +1 or +2 when it coulda been par or birdie with a full swing approach.

@jjoddo4530 says:

Interesting. I play a TS3 at 44" and my friends all out drive me by 20-30 yards but i definitely hit more fairways

@NemoLax says:

Great that this just came out. I recently had a driver fitting with Cobra. My club came last week and i've been to the sim twice now and i just can't seem to hit it well. They added 1/2" because of my height. When i choke down on it i really see a massive improvement. Might be worth looking into getting it fitted properly and try a shorter shaft as well. Thanks guys!

I just skip the first 3rd of the video so there's less rambling/opinions so I can see results.

@DonAl9114 says:

Thank you very much. This was really informative. ????????????

@geoffgray1166 says:

What about the same test but with the callaway mini as that’s a slight higher CC than the Taylormade. Would this be closer to the shorter driver ?

@ivosefranek1822 says:

Wow, Kingsbarns looks realy bad in FXS!

@NextFairwayNorm says:

I bought the Taylormade 13.5 and it’s 2wood or big 3 wood. So don’t compare to my driver, much more consistent than I was with a standard 3 wood

@rufussthoo4083 says:

I'd love to see a genuine 2-wood come back. Something in the 390cc-415cc range, 44" – 44.5" shaft with 10.5 and 12.5 degree loft options. Now that would be a proper 'mini driver' and not just a big 3-wood.

@linlishu says:

Why the spin rate is so high when U cut it short?!

@simonsaunders1730 says:

My tee-alternate is a SIM DHY… if driver isn’t working, I don’t want to be looking down at anything that looks remotely similar ???? Psychology rather than science, but works for me.

@christophersamson5100 says:

It is my understanding that the average on the tour is 44.5 inches. Which given most players are over 6feet tall this would suggest that most amateurs should have something less than 45 inches.

@anthonybending2687 says:

Cobra darkspeed LS , 75 grm 3 wood shaft, 3 weight ports to put weight where needed,

@andrewpearce2862 says:

I took my normal driver and cut it down to 44”. Added weight back and due to improved center strikes I’ve found I’ve hardly lost any distance (bottom end/bad strikes are longer), but gained massive improvements in control.
