Why Your Golf Swing Needs THIS Unexpected Key Move

In this lesson I wanted to share a simple solution to a problem that i have been seeing quite a bit recently with the students I have been working with.

Many of these had steep swings, over the top moves are were cutting across the golf ball at impact, they all had 1 common mistake in transition. Over the years many golfers have been told that the ‘arms' are bad when it comes to the golf swing and you should focus more on the body and the bigger muscles…… it was that exact concept that was hurting these golfers.

In this lesson I show you exactly what the arms should be doing and give you a really simple and easy way of training this into your swing. The students that I showed this to all saw instant results with better downswings and better shots, if it helped them I know it can help you too

As always i'm keen to hear your thoughts so drop down below and let me know if you have any thoughts or questions

Well spoken and presented,, very helpful…????

2nd comment. Isn’t the weight shift shoulder down first then hit the bag?

@Mike-wv2pn says:

Great info sir

Excellent video. The instructors at AMG golf, Brian Manzella, and Michael Jacobs have made the same point in criticizing the artificial laying down of the shaft type of shallowing that is all too popular these days. The artificial laying down shallowing opens the clubface! May I suggest that you show that contrast in a future video? Your method is far superior and the drill is terrific. Just lower the arms. That is what the pros do!

@paulreynolds866 says:

Light bulb moment for me, thank you ????

@MichaelKolander says:

Can't say enough good things about this video. Thank you for the clear and concise tips. Improved my game tremendously!

@Vincentthecatsings says:

The bag drill explains the nature of the swing better than any I have found. Ever. Thank you.

Chris -This a game changer. You feel the club head doing the work and coming in from inside with inertia. If you have a bit of a flying right elbow would you advocate initiating the downswing with your hands and arms down first the way you describe?

best lesson on youtube

@rahulkhetan9117 says:

Do we need to have a lateral shift when hitting the impact bag? I know a few of your older videos had the shift component also when hitting the bag

I have been using this for myself recently have have been absolutely striping it on the range with better balance than I've ever had. My question is, is there is a type of player for whom this wouldn't be a good drill?

I watched this video several weeks ago several times in the evening, watched it again the next morning before leaving for the golf course. And yes I had a very good day off the tee and in the fairways, I now watch it several time a week to reinforce into my mid 70's year old mind what I need to do, It's been a very good last two weeks on the course. Thank you.

Hi Chris, Thanks much for your video on SHALLOWING THE CLUB. I have been battling bad shots the last couple of years going from a 4 to an 8 index while trying to change my swing. My problem has been EARLY EXTENSION, but you brought to light the issue about shallowing the club with hands and right arm INDEPENDENTLY of the body from the top – this was the key for me. Also, the issue of forward bend at the transition causing the club to tip over early truly helped. I have had a couple of very encouraging practice sessions (good compression/high trajectory/slight draws) while realizing the more forward bend I achieved during the transition the more I needed to shallow out the shaft to compensate (I was using my body to shallow out the club). I'm 67 years old and was a scratch in my youth. I was fortunate to have a great teacher – a very old professional that learned to teach from the great Tommy Armour. This move from the top was very reminiscent of what he told me over 50 years ago, only he described it as trying to hit the side of my right foot with the club head – a very extreme move with extremely positive results. Another thought was to try and hit the ball with the BACK of the clubhead – pretty wild, huh? Hoping to have a video lesson with you in the near future. All the best, Ned

@Revellien says:

This is a work in progress for me. I am a self taught golfer who has been able to hit 3 wood further than driver and driver would sometime dribble just over 200 yards with ball speeds of 134. At the range yesterday I managed a 148 ball speed and 240 with driver – but only twice out of 50!!. The remainder were 134-136 range but there is light at the end of the tunnel. I really needed this video to show when to make the turn… I think. Would be really useful (for me at least) if there was an indicator of where the driver face should be pointing at say 3-4 points in the downswing before bag impact?

@garedjennings6509 says:

Does this style of swing work with a driver also or is it better suited for irons?

@oliverobrien1765 says:

Great video Chris ‘ thank you for all the content you produce ‘ this one is gold to me as it’s reset my whole thought ‘ impact bag ordered also so I can be reminded of this drill every time I see it ‘ much appreciated’ ????

@TedInoue says:

That’s an aha for me. I’ve heard many times about the up and down motion but simply couldn’t incorporate it properly into the swing.

@regweekx says:

incredible good teaching, thx so much

@richardschaffner9489 says:

Thank you Chris. It feels so natural and dynamic and less trying to control everything.

@mohitkhatwani982 says:

Great video chrris, very clearly explained concept and tried out on course today????

@bertpainter8385 says:

Didn't even have to finish watching and knew right from the start that this is one of the main problems why we don't get our club and hands at the front leg at impact along with coming over the top even if it's only slightly. This morning I finally saw why I couldn't get to that position by dissecting Tigers younger self. I saw his arms move 1st, while I was moving my hips and shoulder along with the arms as 1 piece. Took me a while to get my arms to function independently for the 1st move, but eventually got it. Now that I see this drill it should be much easier to program myself for that move 1st. Nice

@McVilla1N says:

Chris thank you for putting correct golf information on YouTube. Among all the nonsense i see on YouTube you and a few others are the only channels posting quality golf content. Much appreciated. I now understand why tiger woods said "stay off YouTube when looking for golf swing tips"

@mustachemulligans9846 says:

If you're not doing this and one of the ones that just move aggressively from the top instead – how much speed do you think you're missing out on ? I'm just curious.

@tediekgb says:

I’m so confuse I’ve been doing everything to avoid throwing my hands down so I don’t cast I’ve been hitting the ball pure and lots of control contact with a nice draw, but my speed is lacking. I figured that’s due to age but now I got a practice this that something seems so counterintuitiveto what we’ve been told and to what would seem like would bring back the casting yips again….dude, I hope you’re right

@AlanHughes-g4e says:

Sorry is it the same technique with the driver as it looked at the beginning of the video.
