Are you with or against the majority of opinions here?
The golf rule changes that came into effect a few years ago started this ball rolling, with the R&A/USGA meddling into rules that had stood the test of time has been a disaster with the exception of the 2 hit rule so it's little wonder that emboldened they are at it again, They are trying to establish parity among players in a way that no longer rewards practise and skill in the name of "growing the game"! Most social golfers don't play by the rules of golf anyway and who cares if they want relief from any challenging situation if they are happy fine but diminishing the difficulty & complexity, the "rub of the green" or quirky nuances that embody golf in the name of progress I don't think so.The game has grown just fine during the past 400 years so "just leave things alone"!
I don't have a problem with the changes. The only problem I have is that course rating gives length too much weightage. My home course is a very difficult course to score on, but is considered easy because it is short
Like the changes:
1. 9 holes courses counting is great
3. Sounds like competition standard scratch – appears fair
4. I tend to find handicap committees pretty fair – play enough and you will find your level
This WHS has made me decide to stop playing in competitions….handicaps were supposed to enable golf to be played on a more even basis for differing abilities but now when you enter a comp you have to play off 85% (or whatever is deemed for comp) so therefore the high handicapper looses more shots than the low one so it is favouring the low h'c who is a better player (anyway) making the high h/c unable to compete on a more even level…..(I know at times high h/c players win comps but that is then down to having their h/c lowered…and yes there are those sadly who protect their h'c ….only playing in pairs or team comps little if any singles….but those are noticed…
9 hole system is absolutely destroying club golf in ireland
Bags of sand…????????????????????
The system is horrendous….the tournaments are ruined to say the least…..I’m a 10….every tournament I play in they for some reason don’t wanna use handicaps….they wanna use 80%….that means over two days I lose 4 shots and an already golfer that will beat me loses 2-0 strokes…..it’s all bull.
????????????????
????????????????
????????????????
Whose the jackboot that decided AI can decides the score? That is hella dumb. The current system is dumb as hell and this makes it worse
Expected hole is dumb as heck. Just base it on the number of holes played.
Golfers need to remember this is a game of HONOUR. But in the other hand if it wasn’t for golf terms like “sand bagger” wouldn’t exist.
Scratch golfers should stick to scratch golfers.
Also gambling is about agreeing on a bet. Don’t take bets based on handicap systems if they are not fair. Compromise a bet that works for everyone. Or don’t bet.
I don’t even have a handicap. The golfers in our family that do have them is strictly to get into high level amateur events such as US AM qualifying.
We have a home made system by our group for handicapping created by some old guy. I’ve been annoyed by it at times but it seems more appropriate than what the pros are doing. No surprise there.
2 of those 4 seemed ridiculous. I do like weather adjustments but courses should say what that adjustment should be, not players.
I do like including par 3 courses and others.
The number of holes should just be added in over time. If I play 6 today, 9 tomorrow, then 3 the next day, they should each count for what they are. And together they make the last 18 holes played.
There's one good change 4 balls and 4 man scramble likes will get cut if they shoot well below par makes sense as far too many team events seem to turn handicap players to pros overnight…..par should be the winning score
I’m cool with being able to shoot over 9 holes … if like my course there are only 9 holes you play twice. You can then double that and make it realistic… two totally different 9’s then no… and I also think that the higher the handicap the less score you should need to see a drop say 30 plus lowest score in 10, 20 plus average of 2 lowest etc.
Cheaters will ALWAYS find a way …
so glad i don't play comps anymore, just need all the covid hackers to disappear now.
i have played the front nine and scored 42 and shot 55 on the back nine , can not guess on scores based on the first nine need to have the whole score for official hanbicapp
For handicapping, I think a nett bogie should be the worst score considered. I do agree the system suits the really high handicaps.
What i don’t understand is that you have your whs index, which leads to a playing course hcp. In my case 12.4 to 14. But you never play off 14.
I've been a golf club member for over 40 years. This handicap system is the biggest mistake the R&A have made. My fear is they will keep altering it hopping it will sort it's self out. There's a simple fix…BIN it and go back to the old system .
It’s called cheating that’s it
As a low handicap player, official handicap 4.8, its a complete waste of time to play nett, matchplay or stableford competitions. It is impossible to even get a top 10 there are so many handicap cheats around.
WHS has always been a cheaters charter. The change to expected score makes it worse.
For low handicap golfer like myself it does not work
I am a low handicap golfer, highest ever 4, I am also handicap secretary 2023 at my golf club, there are reports to protect against cheating, because that's what it is, but they are not very effective and rely on the diligence of handicap secretary to review everyone regularly, I have had more rows this year than ever before by trying to be consistent with everyone, it's to easy to manipulate the system with a very limited system to ensure fairness in my opinion
